Welcome to

Build Bass

hosted by Upton Bass.

I’m Gary Upton, and if you’re unfamiliar with us, we specialize in crafting high-quality double basses, working with top artists in the field. Over the years, I’ve gained valuable insights into instrument-making that I’d love to share with you. While I started with no lutherie experience, I’ve since trained numerous luthiers here at Upton Bass, and this course will walk you through some essential techniques and principles of building your own bass guitar.

Why Build Your Own Bass?

Premium Quality:

Learn the same techniques used to craft basses valued between $5,000 and $7,000.

Satisfaction of Craftsmanship:

There’s nothing quite like creating your own instrument. You’ll not only understand every inch of your bass, but you’ll also take pride in your hands-on achievement.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Multiple Ways to Achieve the Same Result: There are various methods to accomplish a task in instrument building, from hand tools to high-tech machinery. While different luthiers may use different tools, it’s essential to learn our recommended techniques first before experimenting with alternatives.
  • Safety is Crucial: Working with sharp tools and machinery can be dangerous. Practice safe techniques, take your time, and know that minor injuries can happen. The key is staying cautious and aware.
  • Tool Options and Investment: We offer guidance to both economical and high-end tool packages. While cheaper tools may need replacement over time, higher-end tools are an investment if you’re planning to pursue instrument building long-term.
  • Patience and Mindset: Building a bass guitar is a step-by-step process. Don’t be discouraged if you make mistakes—embrace patience and diligence. Your mindset directly influences your work’s quality, so stay calm, and don’t rush through the process.
  • Creativity with Tools: Not every tool needs to be expensive. Simple DIY alternatives, such as creating a sanding tool from wood and sandpaper, can be effective. It’s about being resourceful and understanding when to invest in more durable tools.
  • Ongoing Support: We’re here to guide you through each step. If you’re unsure or need help, don’t hesitate to reach out—we can provide additional support, even through quick video tutorials.
